Reception Center Medical Supplies

by Mike Sugimoto and Michael Dussault

This list of medical supplies was compiled using a set of assumptions which may or may not be valid for the incident we've attempted to plan for. Generally, we assumed that injuries following an earthquake would fall into one of three categories: burns, fractures, and hemorrhages. The kits are a reflection of that thinking, with an emphasis on preventing death and further disability, as well as relieving pain.

We began with the assumption that the kits should be modular and expandable. Our base number was 50 casualties with a variety of injuries per kit. Total requirements for a reception center will have to be based on a careful analysis of estimated casualty totals, with kits being assigned on a case-by-case basis. The loss of any one of these kits should not hamper larger efforts at any given center, except in terms of total supplies.

The list is by no means final and should be considered only as a starting point for discussion. Harnessing the collaborative power of the Internet, you can add and view comments on this list. Alternatively, you can e-mail comments to reception-center@fumbling.com for inclusion into future drafts.

It should be emphasized that this is a maximalist approach to supplying reception centers.
